Bankers host reception for Sen. Shelby

Oklahoma bankers gathered for a meeting and fundraising event with the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) on Wednesday last week.  The fundraiser was sponsored by the CBAO and the OBA and was very well-received by those in attendance.

“Sen. Shelby carefully laid out his plans to bring regulatory relief to the Senate floor as a part of the appropriations process,” Adrian Beverage said .  “He is currently in negotiations with four Democratic senators to try and come up with a compromise that will be able to withstand a filibuster.”

The four Democrats are Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), Joe Donnelly (D- Ind.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.). The obvious concern is that Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is not among these four members of the Senate Banking Committee.

“Of course he's going to negotiate and try to get as much as he can, but at the end it's likely he'll only get most of Title One and perhaps Title Two,” Beverage said.  “The stumbling block for some of its provisions, like portfolio lending, is that it currently applies to all banks. Obviously we support that language, but realistically we have to deal with Sen. Warren's objections and try to keep her from blocking any relief effort.”

About 30 bankers attended the session, including OBA Vice Chairman Curtis Davidson.
