I’ve been down in the Metroplex in Texas for the past few days. The first part, I was attending my son’s Coach Pitch World Series. Luckily, it also coincided with the start of the Central States Conference for bankers in Fort Worth on Monday through Wednesday this week, so I didn’t even have to leave the general area!

Last week’s elections were definitely a mixed bag. On one hand, the expected happened when Tom Cole easily pushed back upstart challenger Paul Bondar in the primary for the 4th congressional district. On the other hand, Senate Floor Leader Greg McCortney (R-Ada) lost in a shocker to political unknown Jonathon Wingard.
McCortney was set to be the next president pro tempore of the Oklahoma State Senate, but those plans were sent astray by the loss to Wingard.

The final sporting event of the 2023-2024 college season ended last night with Tennessee’s narrow triumph over Texas A&M in the Men’s College World Series. Now, all the changes for the 2024-2025 season await …
OBA Emerging Leaders Academy accepting applications
Take note the OBA 2024-25 Emerging Leaders Academy is currently accepting applications.
We’re looking for the best and brightest bankers who seek to sharpen their leadership skills. The Academy will help you reach new heights with powerful speakers offering information leaders need for effectively maneuvering in today’s business climate. Each session helps participants become true leaders by understanding those around you through non-traditional methods.
The OBA extends an invitation to any employee of a bank that is a member of the OBA to apply. A panel of bankers will review the applicants and choose those accepted into the Academy (maximum 30 bankers). Participants must attend all sessions to successfully graduate from the program.
There are six sessions to the Academy: Nov. 6, Dec. 5, Jan. 24, Feb. 26, March 28, April 25. Graduation will take place in May 2025 at the OBA Annual Convention.

FDIC releases guidance on regulatory relief related to Oklahoma storms, tornadoes
The FDIC released guidance Friday with steps intended to provide regulatory relief to financial institutions and facilitate recovery in areas of Oklahoma affected by recent severe storms and tornadoes.
The agency encouraged banks in affected areas to work constructively with borrowers experiencing difficulties due to the severe weather, including extending repayment terms, restructuring existing loans or easing terms for new loans. The agency also said it would consider relief from certain filing and publishing requirements.
The guidance refers to damage from severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding in areas of Oklahoma from May 19-28 in Blaine, Caddo, Custer, Delaware, Jackson, Mayes, Muskogee, and Rogers counties.
Bank Fraud Investigators Group meets Friday at OBA
The OBA will host a Bank Fraud Investigators Group meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday in the Harris Event Center.
Bank Fraud Investigators Group is a quarterly meeting where financial institutions and law enforcement gather to discuss current fraud trends in electronic crimes including cards, online banking, wires, ACH, P2P, etc. No RSVP is needed, but there is also no virtual option to attend.
For more information, drop Sharon Lewis a line at the OBA. We look forward to seeing you there!
OBA education corner …
Back in college, some of us preferred to study with a good, unobtrusive, calming album on in the background. One of those was Bonnie Raitt’s Luck of the Draw, an LP we’ve rediscovered this week after several decades. What are your go-to “background” albums when you’re doing a thinking-heavy chore? While thinking that over, here’s some upcoming OBA education opportunities you could pair with those playlists! Take the following for example:
- Reporting Critical Information Security Areas Upstream, July 2, webinar — In this webinar, we’ll dive into best practices to help you equip your leaders to make informed decisions on information security.
- Problem Loan Identification, July 8, webinar — This course is designed to sharpen the ability of participants to recognize potential problem loans early and identify appropriate solutions once they surface.
- Do’s and Don’ts of Signature Card Contracts, July 9, webinar — The signature card/account agreement is the most important document on the deposit side of the financial institution. In this document, many regulations merge.
- Understanding HMDA Compliance From A to Z – All-Day Streaming, July 10, webinar — HMDA compliance is tough! With all the data you are required to collect and report, there are bound to be mistakes. You can’t rest easy though because too many errors can lead to civil money penalties.
- You’ve Been Served: Best Practices in Processing Subpoenas, Garnishments and Tax Levies, July 10, webinar — This webinar will provide attendees with best practices and red flags for dealing with the various legal documents served upon financial institutions.
- Encouraging the Next Generation of Women Leaders, July 11, webinar — In this highly engaging webinar, you’ll learn about best practices and mistakes to avoid on your way to becoming an effective woman leader.
- Privacy and Information Security – Critical Rules for Bankers, July 12, webinar — Customers are concerned about the privacy of their financial and personal information, and financial institutions are worried about how to keep all this information safe from intrusions and outright thefts. But what are the legal and regulatory requirements?
- 2024 OBA Compliance School, Aug. 19-23, Oklahoma City — Students will return to their banks equipped to deal with compliance regulations that impact lending practices and deposit functions as well as other related federal and state laws and regulations.
Additionally, there are several schools that take place during the second half of the year, including , Consumer Lending, Basic Banking and Operations. Get on the list for registration info on these schools as soon as it’s released!
