Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

We’re nearing the eve of our annual Washington, D.C., visit, and I’m excited! We’re going to have another large group descend upon the nation’s capital, and we hope to hear from as many legislators, regulators and any other “ors” we can get in front of!

We’ll keep you updated on the OBA’s social media outlets on how it’s going once we get there at the end of the weekend, and through the meetings, which take place on Monday through Wednesday.

It appears the final debate is behind us, and now we can just pin our ears back and hurry along to the actual election. Only four dozen more days!

Before I get to my beloved Cornhuskers, our communications director, Jeremy Cowen, has been badgering me something fierce about high school football. It seems his alma mater Hartshorne Miners made the rankings this week, and he simply won’t shut up about it. And, as we know, when Jeremy gets to jabberin’, it doesn’t stop nor slow easily. So, here, he wanted me to share a snippet of the Class 1A rankings so maybe he’ll stuff his mouth with one of his bow ties and leave me alone:

Ugh. Complete with Jeremy’s own Photoshop editing, I see.

After that, I don’t have much energy left, except to add Nebraska hosts a top-25 Illinois team on Friday, at the same time Hartshorne visits Hulbert. Take a guess on which game I’ll be watching …

ABA, other associations seek adjustment in face-to-face requirement for borrowers in default

The Federal Housing Administration’s proposed implementation of a new rule removing the face-to-face meeting requirement for certain mortgagees could actually increase the complexity and risk of the borrower engagement process, the American Bankers Association and three associations said late last week in a joint letter to the agency.

In August, FHA issued a final rule that made permanent a pandemic-related rule that waives the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s requirement for mortgagees to meet in person with borrowers who are in default on their mortgage payments. The agency has since published a draft mortgagee letter outlining how the policy change will be implemented. ABA and the other associations support providing more flexibility in the engagement processes, but said the draft letter could make the process more onerous as it is “vague and operationally infeasible.”

Nondeductible portion of OBA dues calculated

The calculation representing the nondeductible portion of member dues attributable to lobbying expenditures has been made for the OBA’s year ending April 30, 2024.

The source of the information used to determine this percentage included the Association’s general ledger and an estimate of the percentage of time related to applicable personnel’s involvement with lobbying activities by management of the Association. Forvis Mazars, LLP, has reviewed the details involved in the calculation and have indicated it appears to represent the lobbying expenses for the year ending April 30, 2024.

As a result of these procedures, it has been determined the applicable percentage as previously described to be 22.09%.

OBA TikTok Time …

Welcome to the continuation of our semi-regular feature in the OBA Update: OBA TikTok Time!

The OBA created a TikTok account to feature fun, entertaining little video segments that feature our bankers and those who work with them. No, you don’t have to have a TikTok account to view these short videos as you can navigate directly there just by using the link we provide here in the OBA Update. For those concerned about security via TikTok, you can also easily view the videos through our Instagram account.

We’ll feature our most recent TikToks each week in the TikTok Time of the OBA Update. For this week’s edition, we visited the first day of the OBA Basic Banking School to ask some of the attendees “Why did you join the banking industry?
