Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

The OBA’s Megan McGuire and I had a nice trip to the ABA State Issues Summit last week in Chicago. With our state legislative session on the docket in February, it’s always nice to share conversation with our peers at other state bankers associations to understand what they’re facing at their own state Capitols.

On Wednesday, I’ll join the Federal Home Loan Bank Regional Meeting in Edmond. It’ll be good to hear from the head of the FHLB about the battles the bank is facing in Washington, D.C., right now.

Federal Reserve Gov. Michelle Bowman put a smile on my face with her words last week. Speaking at the Community Bankers Symposium in Chicago on Friday, Bowman essentially said credit union and other non-banks should be subject to the same regulatory and supervisory expectations as banks, if they are engaged in the same activities.

To which I say, “amen.”

It’s getting close enough now, you can almost see the lines forming at the polls! Only three more weeks, and we can all forget about federal elections a while!

Nebraska was off this week … but, evidently, so was OU’s offense. What the heck was that?! I was in the Cotton Bowl watching on Saturday and couldn’t have been more miserable. Between the heat, the terrible stadium conditions, a nightmare travel situation to and from the stadium and an OU offense stuck in the mud, not even a Fletcher’s corny dog could soothe my surly mood. Thank goodness my own Big Red is back in action this week, and against an undefeated team at that!

FDIC considers extended deadline for rule on use of its signage by banks

The FDIC board will meet on Thursday to consider extending the compliance deadline for its final rule on the use of the agency’s name and logo by financial institutions.

The FDIC last year adopted new requirements regarding the display of the official FDIC sign in banks and bank digital channels, setting a compliance deadline of Jan. 1, 2025. Earlier this year, the American Bankers Association and two banking associations urged the FDIC to push back the compliance date to Jan. 1, 2026, to provide institutions with sufficient time to implement the rule.

That was followed by a letter from House lawmakers also urging the agency to push back the rule.

OBA education corner …

How cool was it to see Stevie Nicks as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend! Despite some technical glitches, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer still wowed the crowed with her most famous solo song, Edge of Seventeen. It’s silly, but we’ve had discussions in the office here about how a lot of us “misheard” the lyrics to the song a different way over the past few decades. So, whether you thought it was a “one-winged dove,” a “wide window” or the correct “white-winged dove,” it’s always a funny discussion! While laughing about it all, take a second to think about what upcoming continuing education opportunities are right for you and your staff!
