Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

Things are beginning to ramp up at the state Capitol. Although we’re still a week away from Gov. Stitt’s State of the State address, the legislative session has actually been active since earlier this month. As such, we’re parsing through dozens and dozens of bills to see which could affect the banking industry. Sometimes, it’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack … if the needle was being obscured by thousands of overly officious words.

We have our first board meeting of the 2025 calendar year on Wednesday. It’ll be good to see all the bankers back in our offices as the last in-person board meeting was in late October (the November board meeting was held by Zoom, and there was no December meeting.)

At this point, I feel like I should give a ritual sacrifice or something to the basketball gods. Nebraska’s men’s team lost its fifth and sixth straight games last week, this time to USC and Wisconsin. While the ‘Huskers still boast a solid 12-8 overall record, the 2-7 mark in Big 10 Conference play doesn’t bode well for a postseason berth.

Survey finds financial institution executives doubtful about data-sharing rule

Roughly a third of bank and credit union executives believe the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s financial data sharing rule won’t benefit their institutions or customers, according to a recent survey by Cornerstone Advisors.

The CFPB last year released a final rule implementing Section 1033 of the Dodd-Frank Act as part of a push to move the U.S. toward an “open banking” system. Among its provisions, the rule requires banks and other financial institutions to make a consumer’s financial information available to them or a third party at the consumer’s direction.

The survey found that 33% of executives believe the rule won’t benefit their institutions or customers, while another 21% said it would benefit only customers. The same percentage – 21% – said it would benefit institutions and customers, while the remainder said they were not sure.

OBA, ABA to host webinar this week on national, state legislative issues

The OBA and the American Bankers Association will host a free webinar on Jan. 30, exclusively for Oklahoma bankers, to discuss the upcoming changes and opportunities presented at both the state and federal levels for the banking industry.

New leadership coming to Washington presents many opportunities for the industry, and 2025 is certain to be a year of significant policy change. Both ABA and OBA are preparing to work with the new Congress and administration, ensuring the industry is well-prepared for what lies ahead.

During this webinar, ABA Executive Vice President of Congressional Relations Kirsten Sutton and OBA President and CEO Adrian Beverage will share valuable insights on the upcoming 119th Congress, the state legislative session and the evolving landscape at both the state and federal levels.

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain critical knowledge on what to expect and how to navigate potential changes in policy.

Review your bank’s info for upcoming Directory of Banks; welcome to new strategic member

The Oklahoma Bankers Association Directory of Banks is again being produced this year by NFR Communications. To best serve you, we want to include the most up-to-date and accurate information about your bank, your branches and your staff. However, we need your help.

To ensure we are using the most accurate information, please follow the instructions provided in the letter that was mailed to your bank earlier this month by NFR Communications. Please review and revise as necessary the financial directory listing for your holding company, your main bank and your branches. You can also use the login information that was included in the letter to update your listing online or, if needed, download a new form.

For questions and completed forms, please email directories@nfrcom.com. Please update the information no later than Feb. 5, 2025.

Also, a big welcome to a new strategic member of the OBA!

OBA education corner …

Two old-school earworms have lodged their way into our cerebrums here at the OBA recently. Both are late-era New Edition hits from the group’s 1988 album Heart Break. One is “Can You Stand The Rain“, and the other is “If It Isn’t Love“. We’re not sure why these particular New Jack Swing jams have been on our mental stereo for the past week, but here we are wanting to learn the opening dance moves in the music video alongside Ricky, Michael, Ronnie, Ralph and Johnny. Whether making a fool of yourself while dancing in the living room or not, don’t forget to take part in some upcoming continuing education opportunities for you and your staff in 2025!
