Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

What a gorgeous day! It’s slated to be 70-plus degrees and drenched with sunshine!
Wait … OH! You’re confused! Well, I’m at the ABA Conference for Community Bankers, out in Phoenix, Arizona, right now. According to my co-workers back in Oklahoma City, all I keep hearing them tell me is some old Jimmy Buffet lyric about how, “The weather is here, wish you were beautiful.”
• • •
In all seriousness, there’s a large contingent of Oklahoma bankers here in Phoenix at this year’s conference, where the focus is on technology and regulations on banks. We’re proud so many of Oklahoma’s best joined us at this important conference.

The good times finally ended for Nebraska men’s basketball last week as my ‘Huskers dropped a home-court contest to visiting Maryland. It halted our four-game winning streak.
Never fear, however, a new streak started on Sunday!
OBA, ABA, state bankers associations support disapproval resolution of CFPB’s overdraft rule
The OBA, along with the American Bankers Association and all 51 other state bankers associations, gave strong support for a resolution of disapproval introduced by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill (R-Ark.) that would invalidate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s final rule on overdraft protection.
The CFPB rule requires banks with at least $10 billion in assets to cap overdraft fees at $5 unless they voluntarily set a cap that covers their actual costs and losses or treat overdraft protection as a loan covered by the Truth in Lending Act. A Congressional Review Act resolution would overturn the rule if adopted by both the House and Senate and signed by President Trump.
In a letter to lawmakers, the associations said the rule would lead banks to restrict or eliminate access to overdraft services, “harming those consumers who have few, if any, other options for meeting short-term liquidity needs.”

CFPB staff terminations, defunding put on pause
A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to pause most terminations of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau staff and not to defund the bureau by transferring its reserves to another part of government.
Last week, CFPB Acting Director Russ Vought ordered CFPB staff to pause all supervisory and enforcement activities and instructed the Federal Reserve not to appropriate the next round of funding for the bureau.
U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued a preliminary injunction on Friday against the Trump administration in the case. Jackson ordered no further firings of CFPB staff except for cause related to an employee’s performance or conduct. She also ordered the administration not to issue any notice of reduction-in-force to CFPB employees, not to transfer the CFPB’s reserves back to the Federal Reserve or another part of government, and not to destroy bureau records unless following the legal procedures for the proper disposal of documents.
The court plans to hold a hearing in early March on the injunction.
