From Adrian’s desk …

Just some random tidbits that might be of interest to our bankers this week!

•        •         •

I was scheduled to be in Washington, D.C., right now, along with OBA Chair Bryan Cain. We were heading to Capitol Hill to talk with our lawmakers about the ACRE Act and how it’s a positive for the banking industry, as well as agriculture producers. Unfortunately, however, the winter storm we received evidently wreaked even more havoc on the East Coast and all our flights were delayed and/or canceled, so our trip had to be set aside.

Bryan and I will still try to get in front of our representatives and senators prior to the ABA Washington Summit in mid-March.

•        •         •

Speaking of the intersection of the banking and agriculture sectors, the ABA Banking Journal recently had a story about agricultural lenders’ top concerns for the coming year. Those included rate volatility, lender competition, credit quality and – as always – regulatory burden.

Did anyone catch the big college basketball upset last week?! My Cornhuskers downed the top-ranked team in the country, Purdue, 88-72 on Tuesday night! It was Nebraska first win over a No. 1 team since 1982.

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the ‘Huskers remain the only major conference teams without a single win in NCAA Tournament play. Maybe this victory is a harbinger of greatness to come in March? Of course, Nebraska followed it up with a 18-point loss to Iowa on Saturday, so maybe I shouldn’t put the cart before the horse …

ABA, OBA, state associations decry capital standards in letter to banking agencies

The American Bankers Association, the OBA and 50 other state bankers associations recently signed a letter to the banking agencies that explained how the proposed implementation of the Basel III “endgame” capital regulations would constrain the banking sector’s ability to provide credit and other essential financial services.

The letter warned the Federal Reserve, FDIC and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency have “insufficiently assessed” the proposed standards and failed to consider the potential economic damage to bank customers and the economy. They urged regulators to withdraw the proposal and re-propose a new version “with appropriate and transparent support.”
